What is Psoriasis?
"Psoriasis" is the medical term for the skin disease psoriasis. The name comes from the Greek concept of "psao" (I scratch) and demonstrates a concomitant of the disease. The German name "psoriasis" refers to a typical facial appearance of the skin: shed and inflamed red skin. Psoriasis is not a disease of modern civilization. There is already evidence of psoriasis in the Old Testament.

Frequency
The figures on the penetration of psoriasis in the Federal Republic of Germany are based only on estimates. Two or 2-3% of the population, or about 2 million children and adults, the chronic, non-contagious skin of psoriasis and the joints affected.

Effect
In a psoriasis "" walk the cells of the outermost skin layer (epidermis) seven times faster than normal skin to the skin surface. The skin of healthy people is renewed in about 26-27 days. This period is shorter in the psoriatic in 6-7 days. As a result of these skin cells are shed on typical brilliant, sharply defined skin areas, combined with a very limited blood supply to these areas, red skin. This expression (known as psoriasis vulgaris) have about 97% of psoriasis patients. Typical disease can also make a definite diagnosis very difficult. Therefore, the diagnosis of psoriasis ever by a dermatologist (dermatologist) are made or confirmed. Not everything that peels, is also automatically a psoriasis!

Diagnosis
The following features are characteristic:

• red staining
• more or less adherent, dry, silvery scales
• areas are bounded by a narrow red border
• sometimes surrounds the rim a narrow, somewhat pale zone
The silvery scales resolved in the initial phase is not so easily from the skin, but take off with your fingernail. After removal it is often possible to solve the underlying red spot a thin coherent film. This bottom layer of the epidermis is the limit for the connective tissue layer. The physician also calls this "bloody dew. Can this last layer of skin to be replaced, this is a sure sign of psoriasis.

Course
Psoriasis can occur at any age, but is extremely rare in infancy. They often first manifests itself during adolescence, and between the fortieth and fiftieth year, it often occurs the first time. The disease is individually very different and often in waves with periods of better or worse skin condition. It may occur once or a chronic course over a long period of time. A worse skin condition is frequently observed in the fall and spring. In about 25% of psoriasis patients there is often a spontaneous healing of skin lesions. This knowledge is often the basis of reports of dubious miracle cures and methods. Each has its own psoriasis psoriasis, according to present knowledge of science cause can not be cured. The aim is a long time without annoying skin lesions, itching and pain in the joints.

Manifestations of psoriasis
The medicine distinguishes different forms of Psoriasis.Zum example:

a) psoriasis geographica

Extensively grown together psoriasis stoves, often in outline similar to a plastic map.

b) Psoriasis palmaris et plantaris

Psoriasis flock on the inside of the hand (palm) and on the soles of the feet.

c) Psoriasis punctata

Psoriasis lesions in an expansion in size of match heads mainly distributed on the hull.

d) Psoriasis pustulosa

Psoriasis lesions with purulent pustules.

e) psoriasis vulgaris

Large flock of psoriasis with a clear silvery scaling with narrow red border.

Special
There can be only certain areas, armpits, navel, groin and anal region, genitalia, or nail head or the entire surface of the skin (erythroderma ill). Psoriasis in intertriginous areas (eg, anal fold, belly button) is often confused with a fungal disease. The same is true for nail psoriasis as well as isolated phenomena in palms and soles.

In about 20% of psoriasis patients also suffer the joints (psoriatic arthritis). This appearance is shown by the impairment of movement, often associated with joint pain. This diagnosis is especially difficult when the joints become ill without accompanying skin lesions.

Problem areas
Psoriasis is not contagious, but not visible, and corresponds to the ideal of a healthy skin. The environment often hostile response or the person believes in the reaction of the environment. Strategies in dealing with their own illness mean to the problem areas of family, to make partnership, sexuality and work. Therefore it is necessary to be well informed about the disease and the disease.
